Hysteroscopy Q & A

What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a specialized instrument with an attached camera to get a close-up look at the lining of your uterus. The instrument goes in through your vaginal canal, so you don’t need incisions.

This procedure may be necessary if you need a diagnosis for abnormal bleeding, and may also be part of your treatment if you have another condition.

What causes abnormal uterine bleeding?

Abnormal uterine bleeding describes bleeding that occurs outside of your usual menstrual cycle. For some women, very heavy bleeding can disrupt their quality of life and makes it difficult to work or be social because of embarrassing leaks.

Some of the most common causes of abnormal uterine bleeding include:

  • Polyps
  • Fibroids
  • Infection
  • Hormone imbalance

In some rare situations, cancer can be the root cause of abnormal bleeding.

In addition to a review of your personal and family medical history, the Surgery of Tomorrow, LLC team diagnoses abnormal bleeding through a pelvic exam and a hysteroscopy.

What can I expect during a hysteroscopy?

The team at Surgery of Tomorrow, LLC, performs a hysteroscopy on an outpatient basis. During your procedure, your provider inserts the hysteroscope in through your vaginal canal and cervix to access your uterus.

If they confirm that fibroids are interfering with your health and protruding through the lining of your uterus, they can remove them with the hysteroscope. Your provider can also perform a dilation and curettage during a hysteroscopy.

What is dilation and curettage?

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from the lining of your uterus. A D&C is both a diagnostic and treatment solution for certain gynecologic conditions, including abnormal bleeding.

You may also need a D&C following a miscarriage to remove excess tissue that remains in your uterus.

After removing the tissue, an evaluation of the sample under a microscope occurs to identify or rule out precancerous or cancerous cells.

If you’re experiencing abnormal bleeding and need a diagnostic evaluation, schedule an appointment at Surgery of Tomorrow, LLC, by phone or online today.
